Echinocereus triglochidiatus - San Luis, CO 8200Ft
Echinocereus triglochidiatus or Claret Cup Cactus is one of the most cold hardy cactus. The seed for these plants was collected near Shrine of the Stations of the Cross in San Luis, Colorado. Plants were growing at 8200ft on south facing exposures. The historical record low temperature for San Luis, CO is -42.2F, I am sure the plants on the hillside were protected from something this extreme but this may be the most cold hardy form of this plant. Red or Claret colored flowers appear in May to July and are Hummingbird Magnets.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 4/5/6 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
