Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue'
Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue' is a select cultivar of the Whales Tongue Century Plant. This cultivar has been tested a few times, plants received tip damage at -5F as a 1 gallon sized plant. Plants died to the ground at -17F and came back in spring with extreme vigor. As the plants got larger they became more cold tolerant and from reports in Oklahoma they seem to take a good amount of wet cold in winter. Over time tho, one unusual winter will make the plants not return. Try your luck.
These plants really grow with some speed once planted in the ground. Lots of space for the roots and they will really get some color as well. Plants can get 5ft wide and 4ft tall but in the colder climates I have not seen one larger than 40" across.
We share our experiences to help with your own trials of cold hardiness. We do not guarantee these plants in any garden or zone. Every garden is different and everyones growing conditions are different. Please try plants at your own risk, I do not want to be misleading to anyone.
