Agave ovatifolia - Whales-Tongue
Agave ovatifolia aka Whales Tongue Century Plant. This plant has been tested a few times, plants received tip damage at -2F as a 1 gallon sized plant. Plants died to the ground at -17F and came back in spring with extreme vigor. As the plants got larger they became more cold tolerant and from reports in Oklahoma they seem to take a good amount of wet cold in winter. These are seed grown plants with lots of diversity.
These plants really grow with some speed once planted in the ground. Lots of space for the roots and they will really get some color as well. Plants can get 5ft wide and 4ft tall but in the colder climates I have not seen one larger than 40" across.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
