Agave simplex Hualapai Mts, AZ 5000ft
Agave simplex formerly Agave desertii ssp. simplex is a true desert champion. Plants can get 20" wide and 18" tall. Plants took damage at -16F but grew out of it in a month. They have take -11F with no damage so the threshhold is somewhere in that area. Plants want some good drainage and like granite rock but its not required.
Seed for these plants were grown from 5000ft in the Hualapai Mts, just south of Kingman, AZ. These plants tend to be more banded from seed than any other species. This plant is commonly overlooked because it is unknown in gardens.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
