Cotyledon orbiculata High Elevation Yellow form
Yellow Pig's Ear (Cotyledon orbiculata) has large disk-like silver leaves, edged in red, grow on short stubby stems. Mature plants bloom in summer with candelabras of yellow flowers that sit high above the foliage. Excellent as a long-lived container plant for outdoor patios and other garden spaces, it can be brought indoors for winter. Or grow it in a rock garden with excellent drainage and protection from extreme cold. A widespread species native throughout much of South Africa, our collection originates from the highest mountains in the country, the Drakensbergs.
Plants have experienced -17F in our garden in Colorado. The plants have also experienced -15F at the Denver Botanical Gardens. These really need to be kept dry in winter or they suffer rot, have heard from a number of growers.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
