Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa Elgin, NV 4000ft
Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa or Buckhorn Cholla is a close relative of Cylindropuntia imbricata. The Buckhorn Cholla are more finicky in the colder climates. They require good drainage and will do better in a rock garden. They only seem to get 3 or 4ft tall in our zone 5/6 and don't bloom as often as I would like. However, they have beautiful golden spines and are something nice looking even when not in flower. Plants are from Elgin, NV. This is the furthest north location for this species. These have been the most cold hardy for me, even more hardy then the Gunlock reservoir form. We have had one in our garden for 15+ years and it has taken -17F and many negative teens.
Plants for sale are 3 year old plants that have started growing new stems. These are very slow for us to propagate and wont be offered again for a few years.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 60 days before 1st hard freeze.
