Cylindropuntia echinocarpa Lee Canyon, NV 7500ft
Cylindropuntia echinocarpa or the Silver/Gold cholla or as we prefer to call it the Great Basin Cholla is found about as far north as Cylindropuntia go in North America. hese plants are true desert survivors and can live in areas with 4" of rainfall. We got our plant in a wetter area with Pinon-juniper and Joshua tree woodlands. The area receives 10" of rain annualy and gets below zero degrees. We have had a few plants in the garden for 15 years and they have taken -17F and many negative teen temperatures. They only get to 4ft tall and are more compact than the other species of cholla. They are the first cholla to bloom and get yellow green to red tipped flowers.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
"Winter Dormant" Plants have been kept outside under an unheated greenhouse and can be shipped bare-root without heat packs as long as temperatures are above 10F in your area. Would still wait to plant in spring to adapt better to your garden.
