Echinocereus reichenbachii Pueblo, CO 5000ft

Echinocereus reichenbachii or Purple Torch Cactus is sometimes divided into several subspecies or varieties. For the time we will just list this as Echinocereus reichenbachii. These plants grow in or near Limestone deposites along the Arkansas River and it drainages. This has proven to be one of the most cold hardy species of cactus. These plants pull themselves down and make a very small profile in winter time. 8" tall plants will be 3" tall in winter, which is just impressive. This form has taken -22F and the record low for Pueblo, Colorado is -28F.

These plants may have some scars or minor damage, they were salvaged from a new road and county jail development. Plants were potted up and have had a chance to grow new roots and rehydrate from the harsh conditions of the wild.

I do not guarantee these in a zone 5 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
