Echinocereus x roetteri THICK
Echinocereus x roetteri or Hybrid Claret Cup Cactus is one of the most cold hardy cactus. We were able to cross 2 plants WITH very thick unusual spines. The seed for these originally was sold to me as a pink Echinocereus mojavensis. But these plants are definitely a hybrid coccineus type.
Echinocereus x roetteri is a natural occuring hybrid between Echinocereus coccineus ssp. rosei and Echinocereus dasyacantha. These plants can have very interesting colored flowers. These are large orange flowers and appear in May to July and are Hummingbird Magnets. Stems can get 24" tall and usually clump out to 30" wide. Plants have taken -22F in our dry Colorado garden but should really be given good drainage to make work in a cold garden.
We share our experiences to help with your own trials of cold hardiness. We do not guarantee these plants in any garden or zone. Every garden is different and everyones growing conditions are different. Please try plants at your own risk, I do not want to be misleading to anyone.
