Escobaria vivipara ssp. desertii Mescal Mts, CA
Escobaria vivipara ssp. desertii from mountain pass in the Mescal Mountains of Southern Nevada/California. You get everything from yellows, peaches and brown flowers at this location. This area is Juniper-cliffrose woodlands and gets around 10-12" of precipitation year round, including snow. These are a little more touchy when it comes to water, this in comparison to regular escobaria vivipara. These plants have taken -17F with no trouble and really show they are cold hardy like their relatives. These are the hardest of the vivipara subspecies to grow.
We share our experiences to help with your own trials of cold hardiness. We do not guarantee these plants in any garden or zone. Every garden is different and everyones growing conditions are different. Please try plants at your own risk, I do not want to be misleading to anyone.
