Ferocactus wisilizeni 'Gilmore'
Ferocactus wisilizeni 'Gilmore' - This seed was from plants grown in Albuquerque, NM, Plants had taken -16F in 2011 with minimal or no damage. We call this one "Gilmore" in honor of the guy who was willing to try these and succeed in Albuquerque. Thanks Alan! Good plants to try in colder climates. These are 2 year old plants from seed. My experience - Ferocactus wisilizeni has shown some cold hardiness when kept dry in winter taking down to -8F. I strongly suggest covering the plants with a small breathable cover and ive seen them survive -17F.
I will have some more cold hardy stock in late 2021 or early 2022. But really I have seen very little differrence from different locations.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
