Mammillaria meicantha Caprock form 4900ft
Mammillaria meicantha is a cold hardy plant from southeastern Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. These plants were salvaged plants from near San Jon, NM on the Caprock. The plants were salvaged because they are building a pipeline through the site. We were tipped off by an engineer who controls the site. The New Mexico Cactus & Succulent Society did a recue here as well. The area got to -20F historically and below zero more recently. They were growing in grassland habitat as well as hard clay. These bloom white-cream in early spring and get a deep taproot like a turnip. Plants are very thin spined almost intermediate with Mammillaria heyderi, but these are definately Mammillaria meicantha. Plants are 3.5" pots and range a little in size. We have had the plants long enough to grow them and make sure they were healthy and happy.
We share our experiences to help with your own trials of cold hardiness. We do not guarantee these plants in any garden or zone. Every garden is different and everyones growing conditions are different. Please try plants at your own risk, I do not want to be misleading to anyone.
