Agave neomexicana Cloudcroft, NM 8000ft
Agave neomexicana has proven to be hardy in Colorado taking -22F on a few occasions. This particular form has been growing in our garden for 20+ years and bloomed several times. These have proven to get quite large reaching 36" accross and 30" tall.
The original seed for these were collected from above Cloudcroft, NM at an elevation of 8000ft growing on a eastern exposure with some pinus ponderosa. This area gets lot of snow and there is a ski area nearby.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
