Opuntia macrocentra Belen, NM 5000ft
Opuntia macrocentra also called the Purple or Black-spined Prickly-Pear is an upright prickly pear than can reach 30" tall and wide. Plants can turn dark purple when stressed with heat, cold or drought. The plants for sale are large well rooted pads off our parent plant. Opuntia macrocentra can take some cold, our tall plants take minor damage at -17F, plants grow back the lost pads in spring/summer. These also reliably flower every year even if they get damage. Sandy soil or fast draining soil is suggested for all the prickly-pear cactus.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
