Opuntia pinkavae 'Fredonia'

Opuntia pinkavae 'Fredonia'

Opuntia pinkavae is a compact prickly pear from the Arizona strip of Arizona. This plant commonly only reaches 20" across and 12" tall.  It is likely a decendant of Oputia basilaris. These plants are Octoploid and have the most chromosomes of any species in the USA, if this matters to you. The original pad was collected on a grassland plain near Fredonia, AZ. Plants get their name for a historical cactus botanist named Dr. Pinkava. It does get pink to brick red flowers. Plants have survived -22f in our garden and are quite hardy.

The rooted plants may have mark where the flowers were or a pad was removed. They will grow fine.
