Pediocactus simpsonii Fremont co., CO 7700ft Large
Pediocactus simpsonii or Mountain Ball Cactus is a species from the high mountains of Colorado. They generally do not like temperatures above 100F and plants need to cool off every night. These plants can be Giants with care. Stems can get 10" across and mound. Our plants have taken -22F without damage in our garden. These will more than likely be good to a zone 4-7 temps. Good drainage is required on these. Plants for sale are in 3.5 inch pots and larger than the small sized. I consider this plant for more advanced gardeners.
These plants have been around our nursery for several years and have nice dark spines. We do a good amount of neglect so they are grown HARD.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 4/5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
