Pleiospilos compactus var. canus - Ostrichfoot Quaggafig
Pleiospilos compactus var. canus is another mimicry rock plant from the Karoo portion of South Africa. It has the most interesting of common names - Ostrichfoot Quaggafig. These are more cold hardy of the pleiospilos genus. We will be trying a few in our garden this winter. Regardless its an easy to grow species and gets large yellow flowers like its relatives.
After 2 years of testing this genus Pleiospilos compactus var. canus has definately been the winner of the genus taking -8F with snow cover and -2F with no snow cover. Plants did loose their outer leaves in the -8F event but have already grown out of it even with below freezing temperatures. Plants have not flowered for me yet, they flower in fall.
I do not guarantee these in a zone 5/6/7 because everyones growing conditions are different but this would be a good trial plant to grow in your cold outdoor garden. Try to plant outdoor 90 days before 1st hard freeze.
